Budapest is the capital and the largest city of Hungary, it is also one of the largest cities in the European Union. The Budapest Metropolitan Area is home to 3.3 million people and covers an area of 525 square kilometres (202.7 sq mi). Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube with the unification of Buda and Óbuda on the west bank, with Pest on the east bank on 17 November 1873. 2. Despite only having a national population of 10 million people, Hungary ranks 8th in both Golds and total medal count at the summer olympics. This places Hungary in 2nd, for the most summer olympic gold medals per capita at just under 60'000 people per gold medal. 3. Since 1981 Hungary has seen a decrease in population year by year. The disparity between births and deaths have been stable at around negative 30 to 40'000 for the last 20+ years. However things are looking good as many people are migrating into Hungary and population decline is slowing. 4. Hungary's current borders were first established by the Treaty of Trianon (1920) after World War I, when the country lost 71% of its territory, 58% of its population, and 32% of ethnic Hungarians. 5. Hungary is a popular tourist destination attracting more than 10 million tourists every year (2013).[16] It is home to the largest thermal water cave system[17] and the second-largest thermal lake in the world (Lake Hévíz), the largest lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton), and the largest natural grasslands in Europe (the Hortobágy National Park). 6. Hungary's main industries are mining, metallurgy, construction materials, processed foods, textiles, chemicals (especially pharmaceuticals), and motor vehicles. Hungary's main agricultural products are wheat, corn, sunflower seed, potatoes, sugar beets; pigs, cattle, poultry, and dairy products. 7. Hungary has had 12 Nobel Prize winners in four of the five Nobel Prize fields, Chemistry, Literature, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine. Hungary even has a recipient of the "Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences" which was established by Sweden's central bank in 1968. 8. The Communist rule in the Hungarian People's Republic came to an end in 1989. Hungary is now a unitary parliamentary constitutional republic. It joined NATO in 1999 and the EU five years later. 9. In the earliest times, the Hungarian language was written in a runic-like script. The country switched to the Latin alphabet after being Christianized under the reign of Stephen I of Hungary (1000–1038). 10. The rubik's cube, thermographic cameras and ballpoint pens were all Hungarian inventions. Learn, Share, Subscribe ------------------------------------------------ Watch the entire series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbZJ71IJGFRTa_XMM9a4hDh2Yo9CsZzOR Follow: https://plus.google.com/+blinder00 https://twitter.com/Sebastian2Go https://www.facebook.com/official7facts ------------------------------------------------ In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Hungary. The capital of Hungary is Budapest and its currency is the forint. Where is Hungary? It is located right in middle of Europe, in the Central-Eastern half. More information about the video content bellow: 1. There's one element of Hungarian cuisine that's present in every kitchen, from Grandma's to that of the country's first Michelin-starred restaurant: paprika. The Hungarian paprika is a powdered pepper, used to spice up just about every dish -- especially goulash. In Hungary there is no substitute for paprika. 2. Hungarian is just about the most difficult language in the world that uses the Roman alphabet. This has been certified by the British Foreign Office survey. It’s an agglutinative language, which means basically that you stick lots of endings onto words to change their meaning or grammatical function. It belongs to the Uralic family, together with Finnish and Estonian and they are not Indo European languages. 3. The Sziget Festival is the Hungarian for “Island” and is one of the largest music and cultural festivals in Europe. It is held every August in northern Budapest, the capital of Hungary, on Óbudai-sziget (“Old Buda Island”), a leafy 108-hectare island on the Danube. 4. The northernmost holy place of Islam is in Budapest. It’s the burial place of a Turkish dervish, named Gül Baba, who came to Hungary during the Turkish invasion in the 16th century. He was honored as a holy man and after he died in 1541 his tomb in Buda became an Islamic sacred place and a site of pilgrimage. The chapel, built between 1543 and 1548, is one of the few remaining Turkish buildings in Budapest. 5. The word 'coach' derives from the name of the Hungarian town Kocs, where multi-passenger wheeled vehicles first appeared around 1500. 6. Just after the Second World War, the country came under the communist rule and when it tried to rise against the soviet rule in the year 1956, the attempt was crushed by the Red Army. Still, later in 1968, Hungary became the first European nation to gain partial economic freedom; it embraced the concept of free market and decentralization too at a limited level. 7. Hungary came into light when it rose in partnership as Austro-Hungarian Empire during the mid nineteenth century. They ruled over the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, parts of Poland, Romania, Italy, Serbia and Ukraine. But soon after the First World War, Hungary gained existence as an individual free state. TRUE or FALSE? "The Rubik's cube is a Hungarian invention" Is this TRUE or FALSE? We have made a video of fascinating true facts about Hungary and mixed it with a few fictional facts - can you guess which ones are true and which are false? There are 12 "facts" altogether. and here's a helpful tip: there are at least 3 false and at least 3 true but you will have to check out the answers on http://www.listenandlearnusa.com/true-or-false-facts/hungarian.php to see how many there are of each and which ones you got right. Who are we? Travel video about destination Hungary. The land of the Magyars is considered to be one of the oldest cultural regions in Europe and whose history dates back to primeval times. Hungary is a gateway between East and West, with a remarkable past and is a diverse country of nature and culture. In 1991 the Fertö Hansag National Park was founded on the Hungarian side of Lake Neusiedl, a protected natural area in which grey Hungarian cattle populate the soda veldts of small salt ponds and where water buffalo enjoy to wallow, while a variety of water fowl stop on their annual migration. Köszeg is one of Europe’s most beautiful castle cities, with typical courtyards and the little main square has a Marian column and Captain's Gate Tower. The square is dominated by the tall facade of the Saint Emmerich Church that was built above an ossuary by the Hungarian Calvinists in around 1615. A beautiful Baroque building contains yet another treasure, the Jesuit Apoteka, in which remedies were prepared according to ancient formulae. Budapest is the capital of Hungary, pearl of the Danube and ever-changing cosmopolitan city. In the south of Pest, historic buildings are located within the Gozsdu Courtyard and close by, in the Jewish quarter, the Great Synagogue, the second largest Jewish sacred building in the world. One of the main landmarks of Hungary’s capital city is the Parlament, an imposing Neo-Gothic building located alongside the Danube on the banks of Pest. At the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog, within the northern tongue of Puszta, is the world famous wine growing region of Tokaj where the tradition of wine growing goes back several centuries and brought the area much prosperity. The southern Hungarian town of Kalocsa is located near the Danube and is a centre of paprika growing and folk culture that is well worth a visit. Hungary is a land of many faces, a glorious gem set in the heart of Europe. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► http://goo.gl/HYQdhg Join us.
